Ten Trends in Child Caring

Our lifestyle changes as well as Child care offerings

Many child care providers and parents agree that, while change is difficult, it is usually for the best, and child care is no exception. Here we’ll talk about some of the latest trends in child care and what should parents be looking for when making this critical decision.

1. Child Care is Now Early Education

Research has shown that small children are capable of learning at young ages. Add to this the ever growing expectations of parents and schools systems and you can understand why child care isn’t really just babysitting anymore. Child care centers are now early education centers, where children are prepared for the tasks that they will face in the regular school system. These centers often have staff that have the same type of education as the formal teachers in the school system and features a similar curriculum.

2. Drop-In Child Care is More Common

Drop in child care is certainly on the rise. This is a great trend for those stay at home parents, because sometimes you just need to do things without the kids. But for those parents who don’t use childcare on a regular basis, it can be stressful to find someone to leave the children with. Thanks to this new trend in child care, many places are getting in on the drop-in-care phenomenon. Places like schools, churches, community programs and others are offering these services are reasonable rates so parents can rest assured knowing that their child is safe and well cared for, even if it isn’t on a regular basis.

3. Corporate Child Care is Raising Quality Bar

Corporate child care was once only an urban legend. But now there are more and more large corporations and even some government organizations that are offering on-site child care. This is a great idea to attract and retain some of the best employees, since it’s been proven that employees work better when they don’t have to worry about their families. This is especially true in the case of mothers of infants who are nursing. In the past nursing mothers would have to pump in order to feed their babies in child care. When the child care is right there in the same building, the mother can just pop into the center, spend a little time with their baby and go right back to being productive.

4. Technology is Changing Provider/Parent Connection

Many facilities are using technology to the advantage of the parents. An increasing number of facilities are offering streaming video feeds of classrooms and playground areas so that parents can simply log on anywhere and see their children. Others offer things like daily emails, daily journals or other means of communications, to keep parents as up to date as possible about what their child is doing. This helps both the parent and the child because it allows the parent to communicate with the child about their day.

5. Most Child Care is Becoming Safer

In recent years new security guidelines have been put into place to help keep children safer. Child care providers are thoroughly background checked, sex offenders are prohibited from being near child care centers, and new procedures for signing children out of centers and keep tracking of them on field trips all adds up to child care being as safe as it can be today. While parents will continue to worry about their children’s safety, they should be aware that everything that can be done to protect them and keep them safe is being done.

6. More Child Care Options Exist

Parents today have more options than ever when it comes to child care. Some parents choose a nanny for their children, while others choose day care centers. Some even choose one type of child care during the school year and another during the summer. Some parents are fortunate enough to only need occasional child care. The choices will vary based on a variety of factors including cost and location. The good news is that child care options are readily available even in the most rural areas so parents have plenty of options to choose from.

7. The Internet Can Help You Find Child Care

There are a variety of websites available now to help parents find child care. Some are even free to use. Most states have child care referral systems for the child care providers that they license, and depending upon your income levels, states even offer assistance in paying for child care. In order to find child care online, all a parent needs to do is input there zip code and a list instantly pops up. Many of the more sophisticated sites, even offer reference and background checks to help parents choose the right provider. There are even still babysitting services available in some areas.

8. Communications Are More Frequent, More Useful

We live in an instant gratification society, and communicating with our child care providers is no different. Parents now have many more options to communicate with their child care providers, including emails, text messages and even live video streams, in addition to the monthly newsletters that most centers still use. This keeps parents as up to date as possible without them actually being there each day. Child care providers can now type emails to the parents of children during nap time, which let the parents know what the child has done during the day.

9. Child Care Caters to Time-Crunched, Working Parents

More and more child care centers are offering more and more activities for their kids. It is not uncommon to find things like karate, ballet, tee ball or soccer offered at the center. This is a great option for time crunched parents, because the children still get the extracurricular activities that will benefit them physically, mentally and emotionally, but instead of the parents having to make time to take them, the coach or teacher comes to the center instead. And in today’s fast paced, rush society that is a great option.

10. Vacation Destinations, Kid-Friendly Hotels Offering On-Site Care

It is becoming a huge trend now for major resorts and hotels to offer on-site child care for their guests. This is a great idea for those families that want to take a family vacation, but still want a little time without the kids. These care providers plan fun activities do to with the kids, while Mom and Dad can go out to dinner or go to the spa. As we move toward the future, this service, which is now largely considered a luxury, will become more standard.
